Wendy’s art from the heart

In thanks for the care received by herself and her husband, Wendy Coghlan has carefully crafted a collection of sparkling diamond art for our charity.

Wendy and her husband Barry, who both have Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, (COPD) are receiving care from specialist staff at our Therapy & Wellbeing Centre. Our expert team helps from day one of diagnosis, offering care, guidance and ongoing support for as long as needed.

We have a range of clinics to help those living with incurable illnesses including, complementary therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, lymphoedema care, counselling, spiritual care, family support and more.

Wellbeing support

Barry attended our outpatient service before it was revamped. It reopened in 2023 with new clinical rooms, social spaces and beautiful gardens. He thinks it’s wonderful and so different from before.

He told us how much he likes the new Therapy & Wellbeing Centre and the social activities on offer: “When I came in again, it looked like a different place, it’s so much better! I loved seeing the Elvis tribute here.”

Complementary therapy massage, relaxation sessions and acupuncture treatments have also helped Barry feel more at ease.

“I was down and out before,” he explained, “but felt much calmer and more relaxed afterwards.”

Wife Wendy is also receiving our expert care.

In addition to living with COPD, Wendy was diagnosed with bowel cancer in early 2025. While recovering from an operation, she rediscovered her love of diamond art. Since then, she’s painstakingly crafted a collection of vibrant pictures which sparkle beautifully when they catch the light.

A generous donation

She explained: “I’d done diamond art before and took it up again while recovering from my op. It’s a great way of relaxing and getting my mind off my worries.”

Wendy has generously donated her most recent collection to the hospice to either display or raffle off to raise funds. And with plans to finish and frame more pieces, she will have lots more artwork to keep her busy.

She told us: “I was able to make a donation a while back following the closure of a local society I was involved in. When we disbanded, we had £2,000 remaining in our funds, and we decided to donate it to the hospice. I knew a couple of people who were cared for by there and had said how wonderful it was, so I wanted to support.

“Then, later, Barry was referred, and now we’ve both seen Dr Bex.

“I’ve got 14 more pictures to do and can be in my room for hours, the world just goes by. I used to be so active working on a farm, hay baling, lambing and riding my horse. I can’t sit still with nothing to do, and this is a godsend. And it’s a great way of helping such a good charity.

“The staff are wonderful, there isn’t anyone who isn’t nice. From the moment the doors open, they really welcome you and get to know your needs. We both appreciate being able to come here and receive such expert care.”
