Charity shopping adds unique charm to award-winning B&B
Meet Helen
Helen Faulkner and her husband, Andy Guest, run Eagle House, a multi-award-winning bed and breakfast in the heart of Eccleshall.
A familiar face at our Eccleshall charity shop, Helen blends her love for history and sustainability with everyday B&B life – and even her dog walks.
Often accompanied by her beloved dog, Teddy, she visits our high street shop up to three times a week. Each time, she discovers hidden gems and transforms them into treasures.
“Helen and Teddy are like part of the family,” says Mel, manager of our Eccleshall shop.
“With her eye for detail and passion for sustainability, Helen is so inspiring – and Teddy is everyone’s favourite waggy little boy. Definitely the happiest dog in the village!”

Where history meets sustainability
“I love finding unique, vintage, and high-quality pieces in your Eccleshall shop,” Helen shares.
Not only do these finds complement the character of Eagle House, but they also align with the couple’s strong commitment to sustainability, something that has earned them several awards.
“We try to avoid buying anything new where possible, and the Katharine House Hospice shop has been a treasure trove for us.”
In addition to shopping second-hand, Helen and Andy lead the way in eco-conscious hospitality – from sourcing local produce and crafting delicious vegan and vegetarian meals, to composting and recycling.
A personal connection to care
Before opening the B&B, Helen worked as a nurse and in medical research. That experience gave her a personal understanding of the importance of hospice care.
“Supporting Katharine House Hospice is something I care deeply about,” she says.
“I’m proud to help in a small way – through our purchases and by sharing our latest finds on social media, where we often promote the charity’s brilliant shops.”
Upcycling with purpose
Over the years, Helen has transformed hundreds of items from our charity shop into beautiful features throughout the guest house. For instance, she used second-hand frames and a book of watercolour bird illustrations to create striking vintage-style artwork that now decorates the property’s walls.
“Many of your beautiful items have found a home here,” Helen notes.
“We especially love Staffordshire china, which we use to serve our breakfasts. It adds local flair and character, and features in our décor too.”
Her creativity extends far beyond traditional upcycling.
“I’m passionate about repurposing, from turning old book pages into coasters, to crafting décor from yarn, curtains, and vintage frames.”
Inspired by Eagle House’s historic residents, Helen has even created themed memory boxes for each guest room, using a few carefully selected props to tell unique stories.
Have you found any treasure in our shops? Do you upcycle with passion? We’d love to hear from you – get in touch to share your story.
