Our Inpatient care moves temporarily as redevelopment begins
23 April 2026 | View all news
From 5 May, our Inpatient Unit will temporarily move to Stafford County Hospital.
We are making this move while we begin a £1.8 million refurbishment and expansion of our hospice on Weston Road.
Our care will continue without interruption
Patients will continue to receive the same high standard of hospice care, delivered by the same dedicated Katharine House Hospice team.
This temporary move allows us to carry out essential improvements while continuing to support patients and their loved ones every day.
Where inpatient care will take place
During the redevelopment, inpatient care will be provided on Ward 8 at County Hospital, part of University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust.
We will ensure patients and visitors have clear information about how to find us, including signage, parking and access.

Why we are making these improvements
We are refurbishing and expanding our Inpatient Unit to better meet the needs of our community.
The updated unit will:
- Increase capacity from eight to ten rooms
- Provide private, en-suite facilities
- Create a more comfortable, calm environment
- Offer more space for families to stay with their loved ones
These improvements will help us care for more people and provide the privacy and dignity patients and families deserve.
Supporting more people in the future
Demand for specialist palliative and end-of-life care is growing, and this development will help us respond to that need — now and in the years ahead.
The project is funded through a combination of grants, long-term income and community support. A public fundraising appeal will launch in the coming weeks.
Our wider services remain unchanged
All other hospice services will continue as normal, including:
- Hospice at Home
- Outpatient clinics
- Therapy & Wellbeing Centre sessions
Working in partnership
Carina Lowe, Lead Hospice Nurse, said: “This temporary move allows us to carry out essential improvements while continuing to support patients and their loved ones without interruption.
“Our patients will remain with the same dedicated team throughout.”
Katy Thorpe, Chief Operating Officer at University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, said: “We are proud to support Katharine House Hospice by providing space on Ward 8 during this important redevelopment.
“This partnership helps ensure continuity of care for patients while improvement works take place.”
What happens next
The refurbished Inpatient Unit is expected to reopen by the end of November, providing improved facilities and allowing us to care for more patients each year.
