Kind hearted hospice couple celebrate £2,000 lottery win

Hospice supporter Ron was delighted to discover he’d won the £2,000 rollover prize in our Local Hospice Lottery. The win was a welcome surprise for him and his wife, Kay, a valued member of our care team.
Ron got the news in an unexpected phone call. “It was a really nice surprise,” he said. “I was chuffed.”
Kay has strong links to our hospice. Initially, she started as a volunteer before becoming part of the housekeeping team. Then, in 2019, she completed training to become a Healthcare Assistant (HCA) and has since helped provide the compassionate, specialist care our patients and families rely on.
An unexpected turn
However, the win came after a very difficult time for the couple.
Kay suddenly fell ill at work and was rushed to hospital. Doctors later discovered she had a tumour behind her eye. She spent three months in hospital receiving intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy and is now recovering at home.

Giving back
People know Kay for her generosity. For example, her homemade traybakes have raised hundreds of pounds for the hospice.
“I’ll definitely make some more when I’m feeling better,” she said. “At the moment, I just have to rest and take things slowly.”
Ron said they will use some of the money for a well-earned holiday and give some back to good causes.
“We’ll donate some back to the hospice and to another charity as well,” he said. “And we’ll use some of it to enjoy a little holiday together. It’s come at just the right time now Kay is able to get away for a short break.”
Ron joined the lottery to support our hospice and the care we provide.
“Kay has seen first-hand the care patients receive here. The compassion and specialist support are second to none,” he said.
“You never know if or when you or someone you love might need hospice care. By playing the Local Hospice Lottery, you’re helping make sure that care is there for everyone, and you might even win.”
