“I didn’t know where to turn.”

When Elizabeth’s husband, Stephen, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and advanced prostate cancer, she felt overwhelmed. Information came from every direction. None of it felt clear.

“At that point, I didn’t know where to turn,” Elizabeth recalls. “In desperation, I rang the hospice and had a really good chat with an advisor. One of the nurses came out to see us, and from there everything just felt so much better.”

Receiving our care

The team quickly referred Stephen and Elizabeth to our outpatient services. They now attend monthly appointments with Nurse Rachel, who has become a trusted source of advice.

“She’s my comfort blanket,” says Elizabeth. “She listens to our concerns and either helps directly or finds someone who will.”

Stephen now makes the most of our, Memory Cafe, complementary therapies and seated tai chi sessions.

He told us: “I used to practise tai chi years ago, but that had all stopped.

“It’s wonderful to be able to do it again here. The tutor is amazing and there’s always so much laughter in the group.”

Support for carers

Our support has also helped Elizabeth feel more confident managing Stephen’s care.

With guidance on equipment, medication changes, a Blue Badge and a RESPECT document, the stress has eased. The couple have even felt able to go on holiday again, enjoying precious time with family.

Elizabeth was most surprised by the help offered to her as a carer. “I was amazed that support for me was included too,” she says. “I’ve had Reiki and reflexology sessions. It’s made such a difference.”

That support has built something even more important – trust

“The hospice and the wonderful staff have given me such a huge sense of relief,” Elizabeth adds. “I trust them completely, not just with Stephen’s care, but with mine as well.”
