Vintage style birdboxes sold to raise funds

Talented artist Jennifer Collier has been making beautiful paper birdboxes to raise funds for our charity in memory of her dad.

She told us: “My dad died three years ago. It was all very quick, and we were fortunate that he got a bed at Katharine House Hospice. They gave him his dignity back and allowed us to spend time together in his final days.

“His room looked out onto a peaceful garden where my sister and I would sit quietly and watch the goldfinches darting about. On the day he died, the first thing we saw when we got back to our family home was a goldfinch.

“So, goldfinches have become a symbol of him for us.

“That’s why I created a limited-edition paper birdbox to help raise funds for the hospice.”

Making the boxes

Jennifer creates stitched paper sculptures from vintage, recycled papers and runs art workshops from her gallery, Unit Twelve.

She made six birdboxes by repurposing copies of the vintage Ladybird book British Birds And Their Nests.

The decorative boxes display a goldfinch on its perch and include a real goldfinch feather.

These beautiful pieces, each one lovingly handmade, have now found their way to new homes.

Raising funds

All the boxes have sold and have raised nearly £300 to help others who need our expert care.

Hospice Lead Nurse, Carina Lowe, loves Jennifer’s craftsmanship and said: “The boxes are beautiful, Jennifer is very talented and we are extremely grateful to her for making and selling these incredible items for our charity. Her generosity helps ensure that others can experience the same compassionate and meaningful care that made such a difference to her dad and their family.”
