Caring moments make all the difference
Just before Christmas 2024, Lynn and her family received the sad news that mum Carol, who was in hospital, was no longer coping with treatment. The kindest and most gentle option for her would be end of life care.
Lynn explains: “Before she came to the hospice, Mum spent time in hospital where, despite the nurses doing their best, she was often in pain. There were times we had to wait a couple of hours for help, which was very distressing for her and for us as a family. It was a difficult and emotional time, and we knew things needed to change.
“We live locally and came to know more about the hospice through my daughter, Georgia, who has worked there as a nurse for four years.”
Hospice care
With support from our hospice palliative care specialist Dr Caroline, Carol came into the care of our charity. Dr Caroline, our Medical Director, works with the Specialist Palliative Care Team at University Hospitals of North Midlands.
Lynn told us: “The move brought a sense of peace. At the hospice, the difference was immediate and deeply felt. Mum was always kept comfortable, with excellent pain relief and gentle, attentive care. The staff watched over her with compassion but never intruded and their presence was reassuring and respectful.
Laughter is often heard
“There were beautiful moments that brought joy even in the hardest days, like the hand massage Mum enjoyed so much, or the day the staff put on Grease, one of her favourite musicals. We walked into her room to find a member of staff dancing to one of the songs while Mum was laughing. It was a moment of joy we’ll never forget. There was laughter in her room much of the time.
“Even on the very worst of days, the staff were supportive, caring and professional. They held us up with quiet strength, offering compassion, dignity and unwavering kindness when we needed it most. Their sensitivity meant so much to all of us.
“The food was beautiful, and when Mum was able to eat, she really enjoyed it, especially the Viennetta ice cream, which the catering team kindly got just for her. This simple pleasure brought her so much comfort.
Support for all the family
“Our family felt supported every step of the way. We were offered various treatments and services to help us cope. I had pre-bereavement counselling with Deb who was kind and professional, and helped me more than she will ever know.
“We were welcomed, listened to, and cared for. The staff were there for all of us, not just for Mum.
“Hospice care isn’t just about the end; it’s about dignity, peace and love. It gave us time to be together, to laugh, to cry and to say goodbye in a way that felt gentle and right.
“If you’re facing this decision, please know that you won’t be alone. There is kindness, comfort, and support waiting for you.”
