A wonderfully liberating experience to sleep out under the stars; suits all abilities
12th -21st March 2016 or 11th-20th March 2017
After the success of previous Sahara Treks are offering further opportunities to take on this exceptional challenge in Spring 2016 and March 2017.
This Charity Challenge Trek is a fantastic opportunity to experience life in the vast Sahara Desert; whilst helping those being cared for by Katharine House Hospice. There are no roads, no villages, no people; just a sea of sand, you and other hospice supporters. Although undeniably a challenge, this trek is suitable for people of all ages with a general level of fitness.
Hospice staff nurse Claire said “With all the trekking I had pain in my knees and feet but I was determined to make it to the end. Like many of the trekkers I got my strength from knowing exactly where the funds raised where going and that my challenge was nothing compared to those faced by the patients and their families at the hospice. You find out a lot about yourself on this trek and you experience true tranquility. Now I just need to plan what I’ll do next! “
Supported by an experienced Guide, support team (with camels to carry your bags), you head for one of the biggest dunes in this region to see the sunset across an enormous expanse of sand. This trip combines two nights in Marrakesh, two nights in Ouarzazate en route and 5 nights in the Sahara Desert. The scenic drive down to the desert is one of some quality in itself. It takes a day and a half to reach your trek start point at M’Hamid (where the road literally ends) before you begin your desert adventure. Civilization then slowly disappears behind you as you trek deeper into the Sahara. Some of the dunes are massive! The sand can be very soft or quite hard packed so the conditions do vary. You can even walk barefoot for miles in this stuff!
Whilst it is a relatively minimalistic existence for your time in the desert, your crew will take care of you; the food is superb.
The desert environment is a wonderful place to sit and ponder having left your busy life behind. It’s a great place to trek too; the sunsets are very special.

We want say a huge well done and thank you for all their hard work with the fundraising and pain endured on the challenge. Also to the amazing individuals and companies who sponsored them. The money is still money coming so it's likely to top £10,000 which is extra special with 2015 being the year we cared for our 10,000th patient!
Trekking fundraisers included Jennifer Woodyard (Hospice Trustee), Anthony Fullwood (KHH volunteer), Elaine Basgallop (KHH Lymphoedema Practitioner), David Jack, (Hospice Supporter).
