About Us

» What is the Hospice's registered charity number?

Our registered charity number is 1011712.

» Does the Hospice receive any money from the Government?

We rely heavily on donations. It costs £2.25 million to provide our full range of care services each year, we receive just 25% of this in statutory funding, the rest we must raise ourselves with your help.


Care Services

» What does Katharine House Hospice do?

Katharine House Hospice provides palliative care for adults in Mid-Staffordshire coping with advanced life-limiting conditions. These conditions include Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone Disease, End Stage Renal Failure, End Stage Heart Disease and Cancer. Our aim is to help patients and their families to live their lives as fully as possible.

» What is palliative care?

The world health organisation defines palliative care as

"Palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problem associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual.
  • Provides relief from pain and other distressing symptoms
  • Affirms life and regards dying as a normal process
  • Intends neither to hasten or postpone death
  • Integrates the psychological and spiritual aspects of patient care
  • Offers a support system to help patients live as actively as possible until death
  • Offers a support system to help the family cope during the patient's illness and in their own bereavement
  • Uses a team approach to address the needs of patients and their families, including bereavement counselling, if indicated
  • Will enhance quality of life, and may also positively influence the course of an illness
Is applicable early in the course of illness, in conjunction with other therapies that are intended to prolong life, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, and includes those investigations needed to better understand and manage distressing clinical complications"

» Isn't a Hospice where people go to die?

Katharine House Hospice does offer end of life care and some patients do die here however 50% go home after receiving treatment which makes them more comfortable, these include symptom control or respite care.

» Does Katharine House Hospice only cater for cancer patients?

No our services are not solely for cancer patients, we also care for patients with other advanced life-limiting conditions including
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Renal failure
  • Heart failure
  • Respiratory diseases
  • Motor Neurone Disease

» How much does it cost to use the Hospice?

All the services at the Hospice are available to patients and carers free of charge.

» What is Respite for Carers?

The respite for Carers service at the Hospice enables Carers of patients with advanced life-limiting conditions to have a few hours off safe in the knowledge that their loved one is being well looked after by a qualified health care assistant.


Fundraising

» How much does the Hospice need to raise?

We rely almost entirely on donations. It costs £2.25 million to provide our full range of care services each year, we only receive 25% of this in statutory funding, the rest we must raise ourselves with your help.

» What is the best way to support the Hospice?

Probably one of the best ways to support the Hospice is to give monthly by Standing Order because it is a convenient and easy way for you to get involved, and it helps us to plan for the future and reduce our administration costs.

To ensure a secure the future of the Hospice we need to build a solid base of financial support for our patients and their families and ROCK SOLID supporters help us to do this by making a small, regular gift by standing order and so help us to plan for the future with confidence.

» What is the top prize?

The top prize in our lottery is £2,000. There are 149 other prizes ranging from £5 to £125, so there are 150 lucky winners every week.

» How much does the lottery raise for Katharine House Hospice per year?

The lottery raises approximately £250,000 for the Hospice a year.

» How do I know if I've won?

The winning numbers will be displayed on the website. Cheques are dispatched directly to winners within a few days.

» When is the lottery drawn?

The lottery is drawn every Friday.


Shops

» Where are the Hospice Shops?

The shops are located throughout our catchment area and there are outlets in Stafford, Stone, Cannock, Eccleshall, Hednesford, Littleworth, Newport, Penkridge and Uttoxeter. To view a full list of our shop locations, click here.

» I would like to donate items for sale in the shops, how do I go about this?

The easiest way to do this is to drop the goods off at your nearest Hospice shop. Click here to find your nearest shop.

Volunteering

» What if I want to volunteer but don't know what role I want to do?

We have a large number of roles for volunteers so there is usually something to match most skills and interests. In the first instance have a chat with our Voluntary Services team, call them on 01785 254645, email info@khhospice.org.uk or click here for more information.

» How many volunteers help in the Hospice each week?

We need 77 volunteers each week to fill the regular roles plus drivers for our Day Care patients, plus the numerous less regular but much needed roles!

» What new skills can volunteers acquire at the Hospice?

Volunteering can be a great way to learn new skills. At Katharine House Hospice you might receive training in Bereavement Support, Simple Massage, Mini-bus Training, Food Hygiene and Customer Care. And of course there is a lot of ‘on the job’ training for all roles within the Hospice, our shops and our tea bars.

» How many Hospice volunteers have received awards for long service?

Nearly one third of our current volunteers have received their Long Service Awards. You can spot those who have volunteered for 10 years or more by the special badges they wear!
