Katharine House Hospice, Stafford

Peter Liptrott

Peter Liptrott of Eccleshall had been in remission from lymphoma for just over three years when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Unfortunately the cancer had spread to his bones, the diagnosis was that Peter’s condition was non-curable and the emphasis of treatment was now to get his cancer under control.

Peter says: ‘After my cancer came back I was assigned a Macmillan Nurse who helps to manage my condition. At this time I was in a lot of pain and it was my nurse who suggested that I should go to Katharine House Hospice as an in-patient. I wasn’t keen on the idea although my wife was confident that accessing hospice care was the way forward.

When I arrived at the Hospice I was given a very warm welcome and my apprehension started to fade as I was shown to my room. I had been in terrible pain for a couple of months and following the care I received at the hospice I felt like a different person within a matter of days.

Since we accessed hospice care my wife and I have both had time off. I, during my time in the in patient unit and my wife when a health care assistant comes from the hospice to sit with me and this gives her a break from caring. It gives her an opportunity to relax, unwind and do things for herself.’

The moment you enter the doors the staff seem to work their magic to allay one's fears. The care and attention that you as a patient receive is second to none and makes a difficult experience easier to bear. I have been so impressed with the level and range of care services at Katharine House that I have chosen to donate whenever possible towards the running costs.’
